Penalties for Embezzlement in California
The penalties for embezzlement can be extensive. The punishment in a conviction will be based upon the value of the money alleged to have been stolen. Charges could be filed as a misdemeanor or felony. If a misdemeanor, the penalties could include a fine up to $1,000 and up to 1 year in jail. If the value of the theft is higher, or your criminal record makes it possible to impose a heavier punishment, you could face up to 3 years in state prison and fines up to $10,000. Each case is different in circumstances, evidence and the value of the alleged theft.
